Our webinar on Long-Range Planning (LRP) forecasting took place recently and – as always – our experts Andrew Ward and Amanda Randall were on fine form. Full disclosure – this was our second webinar on this topic. You can catch up with part one – The Forecaster’s Guide to Long Range Planning here. The session was packed with practical advice on how to refine forecasting processes for better efficiency and strategic decision-making.

If you’re able to take the time, I’d strongly suggest checking out the webinar on demand here, but in the meantime, here are my top three takeaways:

  1. A strong forecasting foundation is essential
One of the key points that stood out was the importance of having a well-structured forecasting model. Ensuring consistency across markets, aligning methodologies, and keeping forecasts adaptable can make a big difference. Interestingly, Excel remains a preferred tool due to its flexibility and ease of use – something I hadn’t fully appreciated before.
  2. File and stakeholder management can make or break the process
Managing multiple forecast files across teams can quickly become overwhelming. We were talking about hundreds of files for some clients! During the webinar, Andrew highlighted the value of having a structured system for organizing files and coordinating stakeholders. Setting clear roles, streamlining submission processes, and using automation to consolidate data can drastically cut down on errors and inefficiencies.
  3. Smart analytics drive better decisions
Perhaps the most eye-opening part of the session was the emphasis on analytics. Forecasting isn’t just about crunching numbers – it’s about extracting meaningful insights. Automating reports, running real-time scenario analyses, and leveraging data visualization tools can provide a competitive edge and help teams respond quickly to market shifts. We are talking dynamic reports updated at the click of a button, and auto-population of PowerPoint slides; all very exciting stuff!

The webinar was a great reminder of how structured processes, stakeholder collaboration, and robust analytics are key to successful long-range planning. If you’re interested in learning more, the full session recording is available here.
